Come and tour the TEMA 2023- Project of the Year. Technical information presented by RRISD technician Ronnie Sethman.
The Round Rock ISD Aquatic Center is a UIL competition level aquatic facility. The new facility is made up of one primary pool with supporting facilities and amenities. The district has plans for a smaller secondary warm up pool in the future. The primary waterbody includes a 50m swim competition pool that provides enough space for three teams to practice crossways simultaneously. It included two bulkheads and provides 1m spring board diving.
The building and pool systems are designed to be extremely energy efficient by incorporating a CHP system that is a prototype for the district’s efforts in optimizing energy performance. The CHP system will generate electricity for the facility and capture the combustion heat for efficiently warming the pool.
The pool will be heated to meet water temperatures standards for competitive swimming between 77⁰ to 82⁰F. Warmer water is less dense and therefore has less friction on swimmers as they move through it. Standard water temperatures ensure that all performances are on a level state of conditions.

Why is water so important? A 2022 report from the Texas Living Waters Project and the National Wildlife Foundation found that across the state, water systems lose at least 572,000 acre-feet per year — enough to meet the total annual water needs of Austin, Fort Worth, El Paso, Laredo and Lubbock combined. One acre-foot is enough water to cover 1 acre in 1 foot of water.
Our next meeting is a field trip on Jan 22 of the City of Austin Permitting and Development Center at 6310 Wilhelmina Delco Dr. Austin, TX 78752. The building was designed with 2 seperate on site water conservation systems OSCAR (On Site Collection and Reuse) collects onsite grey water for non-potable uses & CLARA (Closed Loop Advanced Reclaimed Assembly) treats the buildings wastewater up to non-potable water use standards. Together they are estimated to reduce the facility's potable water consumption by 75%.
Texas Living Waters is a collboration of conservation groups working together to ensure that Texas has the water it needs for thriving communities and healthy fish and wildlife.
